Description of Job About the Position The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has an opening for a Head Materials Tester to administer the materials program for transportation engineering construction projects in the Denver Metro/Front Range area. Ensures that all sampling, testing and documentation is performed in compliance with the plans, specifications, the CDOT Materials Manual, and accepted engineering theories and procedures. This position also trains and oversees engineering assistants and consultants. There is one position that will be filled at either the Engr/Physical Science Technician II or III level, depending upon the appointed candidate's qualifications. Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following: Ensures acceptability of materials used in the construction of transportation projects by obtaining and testing a representative sample of material, calibrating and operating test equipment, as well as analyzing test results for compliance with specifications. Certifies that the contractor's construction methods, procedures, materials, and final products are in compliance with engineering details, standards, and specifications. Trains consultants and CDOT employees to perform materials testing and documentation. Oversees their records to ensure they are complete and accurate. Schedules materials testing staff as needed for each project. Informs Project Engineer of inconsistencies between materials and specifications, documentation errors and status of work. Reviews and compiles records of all materials and the quantities used in transportation construction projects when completing the final paperwork. Prepares and monitors project budgets and expenditures related to materials supplies, testing, and consultants. Maintains materials testing certification and knowledge of current industry standards. Ensures the proper use and care of testing equipment. Regularly inspects and calibrates equipment to maintain compliance with industry requirements and standards. Understands and applies all CDOT safety standards. Maintains state issued equipment in clean and good condition. Promotes a safe work environment for employees and consultants. Manages consultant testing contracts. Advises designers and project managers on the testing requirements in the pre-construction phase of projects. Other job duties as assigned. Work Environment: Your schedule will primarily be 8:00 am - 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday, with the opportunity for a flexible schedule May be required to work nights and weekends when the contractor is on the job Approximately 90% spent in the field, and 10% spent in the office Travel required during work hours throughout Metro Denver/Front Range Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado Required to operate CDOT vehicles Required to wear all CDOT provided personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow all safety procedures Required to work in proximity to heavy traffic, in variable weather, and over variable terrain Required to lift up to 50 lbs. and to work with chemicals Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights Engr/Physical Science Tech II Pay Range: $64,445 - $77,324/yearly (starting pay is likely to be $64,445 - $70,884/yearly) Engr/Physical Science Tech III Pay Range: $67,671 - $81,192/yearly Engr/Physical Science Tech II Experience Only: A high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). AND no more than two (2) years of experience in any combination of the following: working inbuilding or skilled trades (e.g., welder, utilities, electrician, carpenter); assisting in the computer-aided design of plans or blueprints for architecture, construction, engineering, manufacturing, and/or survey; monitoring construction projects, conducting materials testing, or inspecting projects. AND least three (3) years of experience conducting materials testing and/or construction inspection on transportation related projects, which includes experience with completing testing documentation. AND must have current, valid certifications in at least two of the following: ACI Field 1 ACI Strength LABCat A & B WAQTC Engr/Physical Science Tech II Experience & Education: A high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). A combination of at least five years of experience and education that includes: Coursework from a U.S. accredited college or university in chemistry, construction management, engineering, engineering technology, mathematics, project management or a closely related field of study. No more than two (2) years of experience in any combination of the following: working inbuilding or skilled trades (e.g., welder, utilities, electrician, carpenter); assisting in the computer-aided design of plans or blueprints for architecture, construction, engineering, manufacturing, and/or survey; monitoring construction projects, conducting materials testing, or inspecting projects. Professional experience conducting materials testing and/or construction inspection on transportation related projects, which includes experience with completing testing documentation. AND must have current, valid certifications in at least two of the following: ACI Field 1 ACI Strength LabCAT A & B WAQTC Engr/Physical Science Tech III Experience Only: A high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). AND no more than two (2) years of experience in any combination of the following: working inbuilding or skilled trades (e.g., welder, utilities, electrician, carpenter); assisting in the computer-aided design of plans or blueprints for architecture, construction, engineering, manufacturing, and/or survey; monitoring construction projects, conducting materials testing, or inspecting projects. AND least four (4) years of experience conducting materials testing and/or construction inspection on transportation related projects, which includes experience with completing testing documentation. AND must have current, valid certifications in at least three of the following: ACI Field 1 ACI Strength LABCat A & B WAQTC Engr/Physical Science Tech III Experience & Education: A high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). A combination of at least six years of experience and education that includes: Coursework from a U.S. accredited college or university in chemistry, construction management, engineering, engineering technology, mathematics, project management or a closely related field of study. No more than two (2) years of experience in any combination of the following: working inbuilding or skilled trades (e.g., welder, utilities, electrician, carpenter); assisting in the computer-aided design of plans or blueprints for architecture, construction, engineering, manufacturing, and/or survey; monitoring construction projects, conducting materials testing, or inspecting projects. Professional experience conducting materials testing and/or construction inspection on transportation related projects, which includes experience with completing testing documentation. AND must have current, valid certifications in at least three of the following: ACI Field 1 ACI Strength LabCAT A & B WAQTC Engr/Physical Science Tech II and III Education Only: A master's degree from a U.S. accredited college or university in chemistry, construction management, engineering, engineering technology, mathematics, project management or a closely related field of study will substitute for the experience on a year-for-year basis.
