Job Description

SUMMARY

Perform research, development, and scale-up activities for new products and services, performing the following duties personally, through subordinates, and in collaboration with coworkers. Assist the EHS Department with chemical and environmental safety responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Work in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Organize and implement changes to sensitive documents, including but not limited to: batch sheets, packaging requirements, and chemical safety recommendations.
  • Monitor real-time batch data and identify deviations from the acceptable process.
  • Identify gaps in current manufacturing capabilities relative to requirements for new products and manufacturing processes. Identify and recommend solutions to bridge gaps, including identification and specification of new manufacturing equipment where required.
  • Perform technical support for production using principles of engineering such as mass balances, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics.
  • Provide technical support to customers, when requested.
  • Write standard operating procedures related to batch sheet creation and document management.
  • Support root cause investigations via process data, problem solving skills, and communication with team members.
  • Help to manage the scale-up process for new products and technologies, tracking status and results of scale-up activities. Keep the Chemical Process Engineering Manager informed on the status of all projects and scale-up work.
  • Oversee waste handling and disposal, including training to employees for proper handling of and disposal of all waste from the facility.
  • Coordinate actions taken in cases of chemical emergencies, including contacting outside agencies as needed and internal response.
  • Assist EHS Department with chemical and environmental reporting requirements.
  • Working knowledge of SDS (Safety Data Sheets) review and approvals.
  • Assist with chemical and environmental documentation and document control.
  • Participate in and assist with Process Safety Management and Flow.

Note: This position requires applicants to successfully pass a pre-employment, as well as an annual pulmonary function test (PFT). This position may expose the employee to isocyanates which are chemicals known to be respiratory irritants and sensitizers. While TSE provides personal protective equipment (PPE) to its employees working around such chemicals, the most current and best available medical data indicate that individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions including but not limited to asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and the like are at high risk of experiencing serious, and possibly fatal reactions to isocyanates, even at concentrations below the legally permissible exposure level (PEL). Therefore, due to this direct threat to their safety, TSE does not hire individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions to work in this position.


SAFETY TRAINING To perform this job successfully, an individual must complete and maintain the following Safety Training requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or related field. Analytical chemistry experience a plus. Familiarity with reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics preferred.

Fresh graduates with co-op/internship experience are welcome to apply. 3 to 5 years of experience preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret the most complex scientific documents, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written form. Must be computer proficient in word processing and spreadsheets. Must be comfortable discussing technical information with customers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory. Ability to work with concepts such as limits, means, standard deviation, percentages, mass balance, and conversions. Familiarity with experimental design concepts.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.). Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

This position will require significant times in the standing position and occasional moderate lifting (up to 25 pounds). Heavier lifting, when needed, may be done with the assistance of a second person.
