Position Overview

Outset Medical is looking for a motivated Principal Electrical Engineer to join the Research and Development Organization to lead Electrical Architecture definition and to work on new product development initiatives.

The ideal candidate is expected to demonstrate strong fundamental knowledge in electrical engineering and applied physics concepts, be able to resolve difficult technical problems. They will take a lead role in reviewing current and future electrical architecture to ensure we are designing systems for optimal performance, manufacturability, reliability and cost efficiency. They will also be tasked with resolving the most challenging field issues and other technical challenges as they arise.

The candidate must be technical, operational, and strategic in thinking with a strong orientation toward problem solving. They must be able to clearly communicate and influence up and down in the organization. Ideal candidates will possess a high level of self-motivation, coupled with a strong work ethic and an interest in building and growing an organization.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical lead for System Architecture and Subsystem development projects. Define priorities and execute on the same.
  • Design and develop electrical systems and architectures from board to system level spanning a broad range of disciplines, i.e., digital, analog, power, packaging/thermal, and firmware.
  • Facilitate board bring-up, test, and debug of newly designed electrical hardware.
  • Firmware development in C/C++ including the ability to bring-up new interfaces (sensors, motor controllers etc.) on ARM/Cortex-M processors.
  • Collaborate with external consultants/contractors to specify, implement and test designs.
  • Participate in design reviews and design FMEA analysis.
  • Perform hardware testing for medical safety and EMC standards such as IEC60601, CISPR22, ISO for safety and EMC compliance in a regulated environment.
  • Maintain an understanding of aspects of the product design outside of his/her direct responsibility. Capable of contributing and/or managing a project team in these areas if necessary.
  • Interface with operations, quality, regulatory, clinical affairs, outside consultants and vendors to ensure compliance with internal and external policies and procedures.
  • Mentor engineers and managers to assume greater future responsibilities.Work with and grow employees to advance their careers.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum BS Degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or Computer Engineering
  • Proven experience designing and developing complex electrical systems from feasibility through to production, from board to system level.
  • Strong understanding on the electrical architecture and be able to advise, design, adapt architecture to make sure we can continue to meet requirements and quality of our products.
  • A passion for solving challenging problems using first-principles approaches.

Desired Qualifications

  • 10 years of experience in circuit/system design, development, integration, and regulatory testing. Advanced Degree Preferred.
  • Proficient in Altium Designer or an equivalent tool
  • Exposure to a broad range of topics in Electronics design with deep expertise in one of the following: signal conditioning/instrumentation circuits, motor controllers, linear and switching power supplies, digital logic circuits, MCU and FPGA designs.
  • Firmware development skills in C/C++. Knowledge of serial bus interfaces including I2C, SPI, UART.
  • Experience with electronics design in safety-critical applications.
  • Minimum of 7 years in FDA regulated medical device systems.
  • Demonstrated experience of design, test and solving for medical safety and IEC EMC standards, such as IEC60601-1, IEC60601-1-2, IEC61000-4-6 or equivalent, for complex medical systems.
  • Experience with electrical regulations and testing practices and procedures
  • Experience with EMC and EMI design best practices.
  • Possesses excellent interpersonal skills and can work effectively with a diversity of personalities. Must be approachable, show respect for others, and be able to present data effectively to different audiences.
  • High level of initiative with ability to self-manage, able to take calculated and bold initiatives to meet expectations while maintaining the ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines in a timely manner.
  • Flexible in daily schedule, tasks required and problem solving, while maintaining compliance with company policies and procedures
