The San Francisco office of SmithGroup is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team.

Working with us, you will:

  • Serve as the engineering leader through all stages of a project of any size and play a larger role in the marketing of the studio and management of the discipline.
  • Lead a team that performs analysis, design and documentation of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and controls.
  • Assist in establishing project goals, budgets and schedules, track project performance, and follow/enforce quality control procedures.
  • Meet with clients, project teams, code officials, contractors and others to address mechanical discipline issues and to develop effective working relationships.
  • Present engineering design solutions to client representatives and/or design review committees.
  • Serve as a mechanical systems specialist, conduct research in problem areas of considerable scope/complexity and devise solutions.
  • Contribute and advocate to SmithGroup sustainable design initiatives.
  • Ensure document and project quality through SmithGroup QA/QC standards.
  • Mentor junior and intermediate level staff and participate in performance coaching.
  • Participate in the recruitment and interviewing process as requested.

An ideal candidate has:

  • A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience working as a mechanical engineer designing HVAC, plumbing, fire suppression, sustainable design and automatic control systems, including experience performing energy modeling.
  • Experience in leading in sectors for Science and Technology, Higher Education, or Healthcare.
  • LEED AP preferred. Professional Engineer (PE) registration required.
  • The ability to lead and mentor others in area of expertise.
  • Working knowledge of the design and construction process and the ability to understand and communicate with professionals of other disciplines.
  • Working knowledge of Autodesk Revit and Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in dealing with internal and external clients.

SmithGroup's competitive compensation and benefit package is designed meet the needs of a diverse staff. The anticipated salary range for this position is $125,000 to $176,000 annually, at the time of posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the anticipated salary range for this position. Additionally, an employee in this position is eligible for a performance-based bonus on an annual basis. Our comprehensive benefits include medical, dental and vision coverage, flexible spending account options and voluntary insurances. We provide an opportunity to invest in your future through our 401(k) program with employer matching and a continuing education reimbursement. We offer 3 weeks of paid time off within the first year of employment, with the option of purchasing additional time off, 8 paid federal holidays, and parental leave benefits.
