The Chicago office of SmithGroup is looking for a Senior Mission Critical Mechanical Engineer to join our team. SmithGroup is a four-time award recipient of Chicago's Top Workplaces by the Chicago Tribune!

Working with us, you will:

  • Perform analysis, design and documentation of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and controls.
  • Perform system assessments and prepare technical reports.
  • Review submittals, RFIs and contractor proposed change orders, and conduct site observations.
  • Coordinate the work of mechanical designers and junior staff assigned to the project.
  • Assist with construction site visits as required for observation, answering contractor questions, or representing the owner in preparing punch lists.
  • Create and develop planning and design concepts for projects.
  • Prepare presentation drawings and otherwise assists in presentations both internally and externally.
  • Mentor and train junior staff.
  • Provide oversight of all aspects of mechanical design and the mechanical disciplines.

An ideal candidate has:

  • A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering or equivalent.
  • 7 years of total experience with a minimum of 3-4 years of mission critical related technical design and consulting engineering experience designing HVAC for new and renovated healthcare, research lab, higher education and/or mission critical/data center buildings.
  • PE License and LEED AP preferred.
  • Proficiency with Revit, Trane TRACE 700, Bluebeam, and the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with three-dimensional CFD modeling and analysis of data center airflow and cooling performance.
  • Experience designing and optimizing common mission critical/data center cooling technologies including air and liquid cooling.
