About this opportunity

The 3D Printing Process team at Align Technology is looking for a 3D Process Engineer II at the San Jose, CA, location. The 3D Process Engineer II will be responsible for setup, execution and data collection for process-development based experiments with novel materials and novel manufacturing processes for R&D products. The 3D Process Engineer II will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in the area of process design and development for additive manufacturing systems.

In this role, you will

  • Use Process DFAM principles to identify and optimize post processing strategies for current and new R&D concepts.
  • Individually operate new additive manufacturing equipment and post processing equipment.
  • Learn process-structure-property interactions for photopolymer systems and apply the learnings for process optimization.
  • Setup and execute experiments and analyze the results using basic metrology techniques and advanced techniques such as CT scans.
  • Be part of several small cross-functional teams working together to solve problems related to additive manufacturing.
  • Participate in weekly and bi-weekly technical meetings with cross functional groups.
  • Be responsible for procurement of experiment data using sensors, CT scans, and visual measurements, and will work with the team to interpret and analyze the results.
  • Maintain records, follow work instructions and present research findings periodically to the process and cross functional teams.
  • Use statistical methods to perform analysis of experiment data.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Process Engineer and Manager to create new experiment plans.
  • Support transfer of experimental manufacturing workflow into well defined work instructions for process technicians.
  • Perform material testing using standard and non-standard material testing equipment.
  • Complete assigned tasks to develop the process for manufacturing custom orthodontic appliances.
  • Create and evaluate prototype machines, measurement equipment, jigs and fixtures.
  • Support the team with general engineering activities such as 3D Modeling and Prototyping.
  • Uphold and maintain lab safety practices as defined in the SOP's and Safety Trainings.
  • Foster collaboration with cross functional teams, support onboarding and training of technicians.

In this role, you'll need

  • Bachelors degree in mechanical or Biomedical Engineering (other scientific disciplines considered) with 2+ years of direct experience in operating SLA/ Resin based 3D printing machines.
  • MS degree in mechanical or relevant interdisciplinary degree with focus on process or post process development for photopolymer based additive manufacturing systems.
  • Experience handling and working with chemicals such as Iso propyl alcohol, photopolymers, cleaning agents.
  • Experience in post processing 3D printed parts.
  • Experience using metrology instruments such as micrometers and calipers.
  • Demonstrable use of statistical techniques to analyze data.
  • Demonstrable experience in record keeping for complex manufacturing processes.
  • Demonstrable experience in troubleshooting problems with logical approach.
  • Experience collaborating with cross functional teams and executing experiments with various conditions independently.
  • Demonstrable experience in presenting technical data.

Nice to Have:

  • Collaboration with polymer design/engineering groups is desirable.
  • Knowledge and use of DOE is desirable.
  • Experience using AM tools such as solidworks, slicer and other toolpath generation SW.
  • Experience with building/operating custom 3D printers, material testing, or post processing equipment.
  • Experience with prototyping using external vendors.
