Job Description:

LAC Federal requires a Geophysicist Consultant to provide expertise and technical assistance to support Carnegie Science in reviewing the methodologies and tools used in modeling the instrument response curves to enable batch processing of the raw digital files into miniSEED format so that Carnegie Science can upload the data into EarthScope/DMC.

Responsibilities:

  1. Review and reconstruct the nominal instrument response (Poles and Zeros) for all stations:
    1. Review inventory of extant network documentation on instrument responses (e.g., printouts, notebooks, Exabyte tapes).
    2. Determine method used to generate original printouts by reviewing code from select Exabyte tapes.
    3. Review work of Paul Silver from early 1990s and attempt to reconstruct his work on instrument response.
    4. Determine origin of initial instrument response curves used by Steve Golden.
  2. Develop model of response curves to obtain usable poles and zeroes:
    1. Outreach to seismic community to identify comparable digitization efforts of older non-standardized seismic recordings.
    2. Conduct testing of poles and zeros through routines that remove or add instrument responses.
    3. Test and compare results across the network to identify potential variations from station to station.
  3. Conduct survey of programs and scripts currently used to create finalized digital files:
    1. Create or update process flow charts.
    2. Review inputs, parameters, outputs to identify potential efficiencies or methods to improve accuracy.
    3. Review time-series analysis filters, tapers, detrending, resampling, Fourier transformations and recommend improvements or alternatives.
    4. Implement and test upgraded programs until correct output is achieved.
  4. Finalize and make operational:
    1. Testing batch processing to ensure programs can be run in the background.
    2. Correct and revise programs as needed.
  5. Submission of a Final Report summarizing all work.

Qualifications:

Advanced Degree in Geoscience with special concentration on seismology and geophysics.
