Position Summary:
Center for Solar Terrestrial Research (CSTR)of the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in Newark, New Jersey invites applicationsfor an electrical/electronic engineer who is expected to design, operate, andmaintain electrical and electronic systems for solar-terrestrial research,alternately at Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) in California and at NJIT inNewark. CSTR is a worldwide leading institution in solar and space physics,operating the BBSO and the Owens Valley Solar Array (OVSA) in California, andthe Polar Engineering Development Center (PEDC). BBSO operates the 1.6-meterGoode Solar Telescope (GST) with a diverse suite of instrumentation. The GSTwith its state-of-the-art adaptive optics system is a world class facility forhigh spatial and temporal resolution solar astronomy in the visible and nearinfrared. PEDC develops and operates autonomous, sustainable power systemscalled Automatic Geophysical Observatories (AGO) to support various scientificinstruments in Antarctica.
Essential Functions:
The preference will be given to a candidate who is experienced, self-motivated, versatile. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience with:
- Large telescope dome control electronics design, build, troubleshooting, overcurrent protection electronics.
- Instrumentation control circuit boards design and problem diagnosis.
- Electrical/electronic equipment operation and maintenance.
- Digital circuit, analogue circuit, Galil motion controllers, Arduino, PID closed loop control systems, integrated circuit and automatic control.
- Data acquisition and transmission over the internet or Iridium satellite link.
- Design/construction of a 100-200-W level, battery-operated power platform with solar panels and wind turbines for reliable, autonomous data acquisition and transmission in extremely cold weather conditions.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
- Bachelor or Master's degree in electrical engineering or related field.
- An ability to work and live at an elevation of 2000 meters.
- Ability to travel to foreign countries and perform field work in remote locations.
- Deployment for field work in Antarctica (approximately 1-2 months) may be necessary.
- At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position
