Straiton Engineering Ltd. (SEL) was founded by two professional engineers seeking a renewed focus on the quality of design and client service. We are a multi-disciplinary engineering firm specializing in residential, commercial and industrial building design. While we operate primarily in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, our projects span Western Canada. Our valued clients include developers, business owners, universities, property managers, government agencies, and industrial companies.

About the Role
In this role, you will work closely with engineers and senior technical staff to develop design drawings for a variety of building systems, including:
- Lighting and emergency lighting
- Power distribution, including schematics and single-line diagrams
- Fire alarm systems
- Coordination of security and access control systems
Our projects range in size and complexity-from small tenant improvements to large multi-residential, commercial, office, and light industrial developments. Local experience is considered an asset.
Responsibilities
- Be up to date on applicable building codes, by-laws and standards
- Operate with moderate oversight on typical design problems; seek advice and assistance from senior staff for deeper technical problems
- Perform electrical calculations for power distribution, lighting levels, and equipment sizing
- Prepare drawings suitable for building permits, tenders, and construction
- Working with the project team to help resolve issues during construction
- Working closely with the Project Manager and other technical staff to provide clients with completed projects in a timely manner
- Maintaining open lines of communication and coordinating work with the Project Manager, staff, and project team members outside of SEL
- Prepare and track construction documentation (change orders, site instructions, shop drawings, RFI's, etc.) with moderate oversight
- Perform site visits, as required, with direct supervision
- Participating in discussions with clients as required
Qualifications
- Graduation from a technical university or college diploma program, with a focus on AutoCAD Design, Electrical Engineering, or Lighting Design; or
- Equivalent work experience; and
- 2 - 8 years work experience in Electrical Design preferred, but not required
Required Skills
- Competent working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code and BC Building Code
- Ability to accurately apply common codes and standards to routine design problems
- A passion for design and self-improvement through learning
- Interpersonal Skills: demonstrates respect for others and communicate ideas clearly
- Communication Skills: communicate in a credible, attentive, and reliable manner
- Ability to identify and understand client expectations, then meet or exceed them
- Knowledge of MS Office 365 suite
- Highly skilled in the use of AutoCAD (2D), MS Excel, and other routine design tools
- Ability to identify risks to clients or SEL and identify technical innovative approaches to complex problems
