Mechanical Engineering Subject Matter Expert (SME)
Job Summary:
Accountable for providing structural, mechanical, and piping (SMP) engineering and design support in both High Purity Quartz and Glass Recycling Americas. Designs shall be safe, operable, economical, and environmentally sound. The candidate will provide technical guidance for troubleshooting and problem-solving when issues arise with technical designs during engineering, construction, and start-up. Additionally, this role is responsible for the strategic development of programs and initiatives that drive long-term improvements in facilities, infrastructure, and project delivery as these relate to SMP.
Responsibilities:
- Provide discipline design expertise directly and through oversight of third-party contractors during front-end development to assure SMP designs achieve project objectives and meet Sibelco expectations when influence is highest.
- Offer guidance and oversight during detailed design, construction, and start-up activities.
- Serve as the SMP subject matter reviewer of project estimates, schedules, design basis, engineering deliverables, and contractor selections during front-end loading and execution.
- Develop, review, and maintain SMP regional design, procurement, and construction requirements.
- Ensure designs and constructions comply with local, regional, national, and Sibelco standards.
- Provide quality surveillance plans for fabricated equipment construction.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and develop proven solutions that enhance the efficiency, quality, and speed of the discipline design process.
- Collaborate routinely with engineering and design teams from other regions to share learnings, standard designs, and to develop a unified approach for engineering delivery.
- Assess the readiness level of SMP activities and deliverables at formal project gates.
- Execute and/or support SMP safety incident reviews and root cause analyses as required.
- Own and maintain the technical content in the SMP technical standards.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
- 15+ years of experience in Mining/Minerals/Metals, Refining, Chemicals, Pharma/Biotech, or similar industries, with progressive demonstration of delivering the SMP function on projects.
- Preferred experience includes a balanced combination of office and field assignments.
- Expertise in reading, developing, and maintaining critical SMP documentation such as P&IDs, equipment datasheets, plot plans, arrangement drawings, piping designs, 3D models, and related lists (equipment, line, specialty), including the development of advanced construction work packaging.
- Demonstrated experience in developing equipment datasheets, specifications, preparing RFQ packages, reviewing technical bid evaluations, and reviewing vendor-supplied design documents. This includes fabrication drawings and calculations for equipment such as pumps, vessels, heat exchangers, storage tanks, calciners, crystallizers, centrifuges, and solids and dust handling equipment (hoppers, kilns, conveyors, sorters, dryers, crushers, baghouses, etc.).
- Familiarity with common discipline design software and/or calculation and analysis tools (pressure vessel design, pipe stress analysis, storage tank design, pump sizing/selection, civil/structural stress analysis).
- Knowledge of the latest applicable codes, regulations, and best practices related to SMP design, fabrication, and construction, including but not limited to ISO, API, ASME, NBIC, AWS, NACE, NFPA, PIP, OSHA, MSHA, and NEC.
- Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Word, Excel, AutoCAD, Outlook, and SharePoint.
- Ability to travel 25% routinely, and up to 50% depending on project location.
- Preference for the position to be located in Spruce Pine, NC.
