Senior Mechanical Engineer
Location: Toano, VA (onsite)
Travel: Occasional travel to Rhode Island as needed
Reports to: Corporate Engineering Manager (Eric Rom)
Salary: Based on experience; typical range for this role is $90,000-$120,000
About the Role
Greystone is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to become the subject matter expert for our proprietary PPS automated precision plating system. This is a hands-on engineering role where you will own complex machinery, lead a small technical team, design tooling and fixtures, and directly influence the performance of a critical production process.

You'll have direct access to ownership and the CEO, and your contributions will be visible across the organization. We are a privately owned company operating since 1932, and engineering excellence is the backbone of our success. We design and develop our own processes from scratch, and we rely heavily on technical creativity and original thinking.
This role is central to our growth initiatives in 2026 and beyond.
What You'll Do
You will own the engineering strategy, reliability, design improvements, and day-to-day support for the PPS system. Key responsibilities include:
PPS System Ownership
Become the SME in PPS machine design, operation, and functionality
Drive a 50 percent reduction in PPS downtime
Provide hands-on support for PPS troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance
Develop and implement design improvements to increase efficiency, precision, and reliability
Serve as the technical liaison between our Rhode Island and Virginia engineering groups
Design, Development, and Technical Leadership
Manage and develop a team of 3-5 direct technical reports
Oversee machine shop operations at our Toano facility
Design tooling, fixtures, and specialty components for PPS and all other operations
Integrate sensors, low-voltage electrical components, and automation elements when needed
Author SOPs for preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and standard operations
Write a comprehensive operating manual and a Quick Reference Handbook for operators
Lead training and technical development for PPS operators and maintenance personnel
Execution and Autonomy
Run your projects without bureaucracy
Acquire materials and mobilize resources quickly without waiting for layers of approvals

Who We're Looking For
A practical, hands-on mechanical engineer who enjoys solving real problems, working with machinery, and leading technical teams. Someone who wants responsibility, autonomy, and the satisfaction of seeing their work immediately impact business performance.
Required Qualifications
BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, or 15+ years of mechanical design experience in lieu of a degree
5-10 years of mechanical engineering experience (mechanical aptitude will be heavily weighted)
Strong understanding of machinery, mechanical systems, or automated equipment
Experience in manufacturing environments
Proficiency with3D modeling (Inventor preferred, SolidWorks acceptable)
Ability to pass a mechanical aptitude test with a minimum score of 75 percent tile
Demonstrated hands-on mechanical capability (assembly, teardown, troubleshooting, fabrication)
Nice-to-Have / Bonus Skills
Experience with sensors, low-voltage/signal electrical, or basic electronics
Exposure to Allen-Bradley, ladder logic, PLC fundamentals, or Arduino
Experience with 3D printing or rapid prototyping
Background in automation, precision equipment, or tight-tolerance mechanical systems
Experience with precision measuring devices and GD&T
Experience operating machinery, including lathes, mills and cutting tools (CNC and traditional)
