Job Information

Job Title: Land Surveyor Technician Department: Engineering

Reporting Relationship: Land Surveyor FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Grade: G

General Responsibilities

Work and train under the direction of the Land Surveyor to develop competency and skills regarding surveying the organization s properties and operating surveying and GPS equipment. Plan, coordinate, and administer the work of survey crews and related staff engaged in land and construction surveying.

Essential Job Functions

1.Work directly with Land Surveyor to accomplish survey projects.

2. Assist in preparing plats, maps, reports and legal descriptions of properties, easements, or rights-ofway.

3. Maintain survey records in compliance with the Environmental Land Administration Monitoring Program, specifically the Survey Patrol Routes procedures.

4. Plan the fieldwork and select known survey reference points to determine the precise location of essential features of the survey area.

5. Research public records such as deeds, maps, plats, and other survey-related documents needed to determine property ownership.

6. Maintain survey equipment and prepare specifications necessary for purchasing new equipment.

7. Coordinate with engineers the needed information to design various waterworks projects such as storm sewers, pressure-reducing stations, etc.

8. Obtain field data, elevation, and topography, plot sketches to assist in calculating and planning, and perform field and office survey calculations.

9. Operate HyDrone, MicroDrone, and all other Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS)-related equipment.

10. Operate all Trimble Robotics, GPS, and Data Collection equipment and software. Operate all other survey equipment, specifically Topcon Total Station, GPS, and Data Collector; Carlson GPS and Data Collector; and Nikon Total Station.

11. Operate survey, drafting, GNSS-processing, and Photogrammetric software; specifically, Carlson Survey with IntelliCAD, Carlson GIS, Carlson GNSS, Trimble Business Center (TBC), and AutoCAD.

12. Prepare extensive records and data logs of survey projects.

13. Set land boundaries and GPS monuments under the supervision of the Land Surveyor.

14. Apply knowledge of mathematics (Algebra, Trigonometry and Plane Geometry) to survey techniques.

15. Clear surveyed property line boundaries for setting survey markers.

16. Operate the assigned vehicle, keep it clean and report all mechanical problems. Maintain a valid driver s license.

17. Adhere to all traffic laws and safety policies and procedures when driving company vehicles.

18. Perform all work safely in accordance with established safety policies and procedures. Comply with all safety and health standards and guidelines issued by management.

19. Perform other duties as assigned

Education

Associate degree in Drafting or Engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Experience

Two (2) years experience in property survey and/or property maintenance work required. Should also have experience and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of the laws, codes, methods, principles, and practices related to land surveying including ALTA/ACSM Standards
  • Knowledge of the architectural and engineering principles and practices applied in the location, design, inspection, and construction of Water Works projects
  • Knowledge of current developments and literature in the field of surveying Knowledge of survey instruments and their proper use
  • Ability to determine property ownership from the research of plat books, deeds, and maps
  • Ability to perform complex mathematical calculations related to surveying
  • Ability to read and interpret civil engineering plans, maps, and specifications

Physical Demands

Walking various distances in varying terrain 70% of the time.

May be required to bend, stoop, climb, etc. to accomplish surveying tasks.

Moderate noise (business office); loud noise; indoor and outdoor exposure to extreme hot/cold/wet weather conditions and hazardous chemicals

• Field environment; drive and travel to and from worksites; work in and with water; access to confined spaces such as crawl spaces of houses
