Optical Material and Process Engineer, DOT Hardware

As an Optical Material and Process Engineer, you will engage with an experienced cross-disciplinary staff to conceive and design innovative products. You will work closely with an internal inter-disciplinary team, and outside partners to drive key optical material and process development to influence the product definition, execution and test. You must be responsive, flexible and able to succeed within an open collaborative peer environment. You will need to travel to suppliers and contract manufacturer sites world-wide to support technology and product development activities (20% travel).

Key Job Responsibilities
  1. Responsible for developing optical materials and process to support prototyping, product development and mass production.
  2. Work with cross-functional team to convert product KPI to material property requirements and develop/source material, process, tools and analytic methodologies to support product development.
  3. Keep an overview of the state of the art in glass and optical grade plastic, optical thin film, adhesive/binder, surface treatment technologies, and nanostructure patterning such as photo lithography, dry etching and nano-imprinting.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Bachelor's degree in material science, chemical engineering, polymer science, optical engineering, physics or related fields.
  2. 5+ years of hands-on industrial experience in optical material R&D, characterization and testing, manufacturing process development and experienced in mass production.
  3. Experience with a broad range of optical, thermal, mechanical, chemical, elemental and surface metrologies and analytical skills.
  4. Advanced experience in failure analysis, design of experiments and statistical data analysis.
  5. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Advanced degree in material science, chemical engineering, polymer science, optical engineering, physics or related fields.
  2. 10+ years of hands-on industrial experience in optical material R&D, characterization and testing, manufacturing process development and experienced in mass production.
  3. Experience in inorganic and organic optical materials development, characterization and manufacturing processes.
  4. Experience with photosensitive optical materials.
  5. Experience in optical metrology, industry-standard measurement tools, and test stations and techniques.
  6. Deep understanding of material, surface and interface properties control, environmental, chemical and mechanical reliability testing and product structure integrity.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work with cross-functional teams.
  8. Experience in managing third party suppliers and overseas suppliers/partners.
