(Relocation to Iowa is available.) The Staff Mechanical Engineer is an important role in developing, maintaining, and executing product designs that keep impaired drivers off the road and enables drivers to get responsibly back behind the wheel. As part of a high-performing technical team, your work will be a critical part of innovative new product development and regulatory compliance certification. Our products work as a system in the IoT space to measure, monitor, and report chemical impairment to help hold drivers accountable and keep the roads safer. The staff role is responsible for a high degree of proficiency in mechanical product development, ownership of key product functions, and providing technical guidance to ensure the highest degree of success. Duties & Responsibilities: 1. Utilize knowledge of mechanics, fluid flow, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and materials to design effective product functions. 2. Strong knowledge of plastics design, manufacturing methods, and assembly techniques for proactive design for manufacturing. 3. Collaborate with Engineering and non-engineering team members to establish design requirements. 4. Use creativity and engineering principles to design custom components and integrate with off-the-shelf components. 5. Estimating and contributing information for project budgets. 6. Performs patent reviews/evaluations and contributes to the patent portfolio through idea generation. 7. Coordinate with test lab to establish testing protocols. 8. Provide expert recommendations and have technical ownership of critical product decisions. 9. Collaborate with suppliers to achieve desired functionality from purchased components. 10. Prepare and deliver technical presentations, reports and other design documentation. 11. Utilize engineering experience, technical investigation skills, and experimental testing to determine the root cause of device failures. 12. Provide technical and procedural guidance to less experienced staff. 13. Lead and coordinate technical members of project teams, across mechanical, electrical and firmware disciplines. 14. Present findings and provide recommendations on project and product direction to business leaders. 15. Effectively communicate with cross functional teams, outside resources, and personnel of other disciplines. 16. Travel to suppliers or customer sites, about 5-10% possible. 17. All other duties as assigned. Job Requirements: 1. Technical skillset utilizes a strong understanding of the principles of mechanics, fluid flow, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and materials. 2. 10+ years' experience doing the hands-on design of electro-mechanical products. 3. BS in mechanical engineering or similar 4-yr technical degree. 4. Experience working with design of plastic parts for machining and injection molding. 5. Experience working with design of sheet metal parts and machined parts. 6. Experience designing test fixtures and/or assembly jigs for manufacturing. 7. Experience with designing for different types of prototyping and manufacturing for high volume and low volume products. 8. Experience with SolidWorks or similar CAD system, including ability to conduct finite element analyses. 9. Experience constructing test plans for design verification. 10. Design experience or mechanic experience with automobiles desired. 11. Experience conducting fluid flow analysis is a plus. 12. Experience or knowledge of PTC's Arena management system is a plus. 13. Experience with breath sampling technology, user experience design or other handheld technologies is desirable. Why work for us?
